Qi Gong & Nei Gong
Qi Gong can be translated as mastery of energy. It is a series of exercises that bring about a change in the body, mind, and energy of the practitioner. Qi Gong exercise can be static or movement based, working to open and stretch the body, so the Qi can sink, consolidate and begin to circulate. To help understand what Qi is you can think of it as an aspect of the mind reaching out into the body. Through this connection the practice of Qi Gong essentially refashions the body, opens the channels and transforms the quality of the mind. Qi Gong is a tool, which is part of a deeper, step by step process known as Nei Gong or internal skill.
Wuji.
Wuji means without reflection. It is said to be the first manifestation from the Dao and holds the potential for all existence. It is the key standing posture of the system and holds within its practice the core principles of stillness and movement, body form and quality of mind. It is said that if you understand the Wuji of the system you practice then you understand the system itself. It is like the trunk of a tree from which all the branches of the other practices spring. It works in cooperation with your Qi Gong practice and so is an essential part of any Qi Gong training.
Dao Yin.
Dao Yin means to lead and guide. We teach two sets of of Dao Yin at our London school, the Wu Dao Yin and the Dragon Dao Yins. The main purpose of these exercises are to clear the body and mind of pathogenic energy and stagnation, which can manifest in poor physical states through the body and destructive thought patterns in the mind. The movements often generate a lot of stretch through the connective tissues of the body and are combined with intention and correct breathing to clear out debris along the lines and open more space within the joints. These are very powerful methods for moving the body toward a state of better health and a balanced mind.
Breath Work.
The breath is intimately connected to the efficiency of the body's functions and the quality of the mind. We use specific practices to help return our breathing to its most natural and healthy state. This is done through the different practices of standing postures, movement work and quiet seated practice. Over time the practices transform the breathing until it is anchored, quiet, deep and at ease. It is at this point that we can start to develop the next stages of breathing that are inherent to Qi Gong and the Nei Gong process.
Body Development.
The Daoist tradition has always viewed the body as integral to the development of the spirit. The mind body connection is absolute and so to develop our mind and ultimately our spirit the body must be developed too. Internal training at our London based school develops the strength of the body in a very specific manner using the Qi. Qi will develop the tissues and overall health and power of the practitioner but it's also important to have external practices too. It is for this reason that we have a strong stretching and flexibility ethos in the school, coupled with calisthenic exercises to develop core strength and the opportunity to study the art of Wing Chun Kung Fu for those who wish to.
Kung Fu Classes.
Our Wing Chun Kung Fu classes teach a dynamic and fast-paced form of Kung Fu or martial art. Although Wing Chun is primarily an external style it requires some key internal principals to reach the highest levels. The body must be strong and open and the mind sharp yet released. For those interested in this type of thing it is an ideal accompaniment to internal practice. Kung Fu will develop discipline and focus and keep you grounded in the physical world, developing powerful fighting skills.
The purpose of Qi Gong is to learn how to master life.
“The Dao that can be trodden is not the unchanging Dao. That which can be defined is not the original name.”
— Dao Te Ching
